This boat was intended to be a minimal river and open water racer for two lightweight experienced sailors (or one larger one) – big sail for the fluctuating conditions, light enough to plane consistently and cartop portable – it was also based on the Oz Goose built with incredible attention to detail. It requires a small amount of work to complete.
Was bought by Goat Island Skiff Builder and sailor D’Jack from France
I have no commercial interest but was involved from the start as a consultant. The couple building it, now my firm friends Maz and Fuzz are considering relocation to another continent for work.
DISCLAIMER – the reason for the different shape was to make the original rectangular boat more curvy. Fuzz feels it was so much extra work that it is not really worth it. But for the new owner – all the troublesome work is done. GBP1800.
Group Effort to design a very small boat with planing performance for two or one sailors
We worked together to develop this concept. It is a boat that will be underestimated, but with a light crew or larger single crew will be able to do better than just participate in mixed class distance events.
Maz and Fuzz will sell for around GBP1800 – less than materials cost.
- Length 12ft x 4ft11’+
- Hull Weight 98lbs to easily cartop
- Super accurate templated foil sections
- Alloy spars
- Sail area – upgraded from Oz Goose 89 to Goat Island Skiff 105sf balance lug
- Premium materials at every point (as shown by the build photos)
- Incredible attention to detail (also shown by build photos)
Can the boat handle waves?
Yes, The Oz Goose is well known for sailing safely and fast in weather that many more conventionally shaped boats have trouble with.
To Complete the Boat would be a budget of around £100
- 4mm dyneema/spectra (main halyard, downhaul, and to tie the sail corners)
- lacing cord
- main sheet/blocks.
These are personal in terms of colour and spec. Can be simple and effective from around £100 or more if ball bearing blocks are wanted
Hull is light Okoume ply and beautifully built.
Fuzz chased up all sorts of hard to get materials. Lovely old growth Western Red Cedar that had been stored for a long time at a local timber yard, trim timber. But the boat has been kept minimalist at every point.
That’s a reflection of the light on the port side deck.
Even the hidden elements have been thought about to minimise size, each one a sculpture.
Brand New 105sq ft sail 5oz fabric
Same sail design as this one.
SAiling single handed or less experienced sailors could sail the boat reefed.
Foils are optimised using a template and the Pollock Sections
Partway through the trailing edge templating process – the reference edge on the left has to hit the table at the same time as all gaps disappearing between the template and the table top.
Aluminium Spars 6000 series T6
Yard, boom and freestanding mast from Left to right. Mast is sleeved around the partner area. Meticulous detailing again.
See our rigging page on how to rig the simplest way. This boat deserves an adjustable downhaul and outhaul.
Rigging this type of boat typically takes 5 minutes. Some gear supplied but some options to be decided by the new owner.
Lightweight Rudder Box – as used on our fleet of 70 Oz Goose Sailboats
But again, the nicest one of its type!
The advantage of this type of rudderbox is the rudder can be raised in shallow water but steering remains light and accurate. Also if it hits anything it will swing back, and then go back to its original position when the obstruction is passed.
